Nikon GP-1 review: useless

I’ve tested the Nikon GP-1 GPS module on my Nikon D700. It’s useless. After running around with it the whole day it did not catch a single signal. I double-checked and the iPhone GPS always had reception. I think it’s just not working. Also the cable to connect the GPS-module with the camera is anoying.

  • I agree with M.

I just ordered my second Nikon GP-1 and both do nothing at all (no lights or anything). I'm pretty sure I inadvertently damaged the port on my D90 with the first. Many people are talking about how fragile the connectors are. Atleast yours geotagged some photos. :(

  • I would like to reword the original review; it is not useless. Actually if you are out in the wild it is working ok. However, I find that the GPS receiver is much worse than the one in my iPhone, i.e. the iPhone knew quite exactly where I've been while the camera only had a correct position in 20% of the tries. What I really dislike is the extra cable. Nikon should have found a way to transmit data betweenn the flash shoe and the camera without requireing another cable. Bottom line: it's ok but I would not buy it again.

I have found that the cable on the side of the camera is more of a problem than the GPS not working. In fact, after a short period of time, the cabling on the side of the camera damaged the jack on the camera because of the way it sticks out and gets bumped.
  • I gave it another try and it was slightly better. I still think that an external GPS receiver is the better choice.
